During the middle ages, sculptors decorated the facades of churches, pulpits, and portals with works created with materials such as bronze and marble; which then went on to inspire emerging renaissance artists. They studied Greek and Roman art and used those references to create new and exciting sculptures which flowed with such harmony and proportion, that they sometimes looked more realistic than their original forms.

One of the most famous of all the renaissance sculptors was Donatello (1386-1466). He first traveled and worked his way through Firenze and then Padova, where he took concepts from classic art pieces and incorporated them into his works.

Three fine examples of Donatello’s work where he represents the human form magnificently, are The Cantoria Balcony, David, and The Equestrian Statue of Gattamelata. The Cantoria balcony portrays a group of religious dancers and singers, David showcases a perfectly confident and serene young warrior about to overthrow Goliath, and The Equestrian Statue of Gattamelata shows the confidence and charismatic Erasmo da Narni (known as Gattamelata) who was the leader of the Republic of Venice.

The Cantoria was created using marble, mosaic and bronze by Donatello between 1433 and 1439, and it was originally carved for the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence; portraying groups of religious dancers and singers cavorting around in pure religious abandon. This piece is presently preserved at the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, and is considered one of the earliest Florentine renaissance masterpieces.

This sculpture represents the young biblical shepherd, David; who defeated the Goliath the giant and eventually became the ruler of Israel. The young adolescent is posed in a very natural position, which showcases this sculpture to the viewer beautifully as light reflects smoothly off every curve as you move to view it from different angles. His face reflects a calm smile and his body language speaks of complete confidence. David was created between 1440-1443 and it was created in bronze.
